Russian VK launches new app store

According to Reuters, the Russian Internet group VK launched an in-house application store on Wednesday. The company hopes this new store will replace all Western alternatives. Recall that popular stores like Google Place Store and Apple App Store are no longer active in Russia. VK, often referred to as “Facebook of Russia”, has launched a beta version of its app store called RuStore. This store will be available for Android users from Wednesday.

Apple and Google, which own two of the world’s largest app stores, previously limited access to Russian users. Thereby, Russia is driving the rapid development of domestic digital alternatives. VK, which has a range of online services from social media platforms to food delivery, is a leader in the race to replace Western services.

The creation of RuStore is supported by the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media. It also has the backing of Russian tech company Yandex (YNDX.O). In addition, the country’s largest lender, Sberbank (SBER.MM) and cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab also support RuStore.

VK said the App Store launched with more than 100 apps, including some government services, and was adding more every day. Vladimir Kiriyenko, CEO of VK, said, “I’m sure RuStore will be in high demand from users and developers. It has everything it needs to become the largest Russian app store”.

In a statement at the launch, Maksut Shadaev, Minister of Communications and Media, said, “Building a Russian app store is a critical task, dictated by market conditions.”

NashStore is another Russian app store

Russian technology developers are building an app store that can replace Google’s Google Play. Google Play has suspended all paid servicesincluding subscriptions, in Russia this month amid Western sanctions.

“Unfortunately, Russians can no longer use Google Play to buy apps normally, and developers have lost their source of income,” said Vladimir Zykov, project manager at Digital platform. “That’s why we created the Russian app store NashStore,” Zikov said in a statement. NashStore, which translates to “OurStore” in English, will serve Android mobile devices and will eventually be compatible with the Russian Mir bank card.

Since the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there have been several sanctions against Russia. The nation is now doing its best to ensure that it provides for the needs of its citizens. Despite all the sanctions, the war continues to rage and even escalate. According to US President Biden, these sanctions are unlikely to stop the war. However, he thinks the sanction will put some kind of pressure on Russia. Obviously, these sanctions do not deter the Russians from war.
