Local shop to run free fireworks safety courses

At the start of the 4th of July weekend, fireworks will take place, but if you plan to organize your own, the authorities want you to do so safely. To help with these efforts, the Spirit of ’76 Fireworks store is hosting a free fireworks safety course on Saturday.

The safety course is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the Spirit of ’76 seasonal tent. After the class, officials said attendees would walk away with a free goodie bag containing novelty items, printed safety materials and a pair of safety goggles.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, over the past 15 years, fireworks-related injuries have increased by 25%. In 2021, 9 people died and 11,500 people were injured in incidents involving fireworks.

They say the 11,500 is down from more than 15,000 fireworks-related injuries in 2020, when most public displays were canceled due to the pandemic.

To stay safe when using fireworks, the CPSC says never let young children play with or light fireworks, including sparklers. Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire, and only buy and light fireworks labeled for “non-professional” use.
