The actual download process is fairly straightforward, although HBO does have a few restrictions that users will want to keep in mind. For starters, only up to 30 titles can be downloaded at one time. This rule applies to all profiles and devices that an account is linked to, which means it could be a potential hurdle for large families sharing an account with multiple people. Also, once someone starts watching a show they’ve downloaded, they only have 48 hours to finish watching it before it expires. HBO offers the option to renew an expired download “multiple” times, but that’s always something to keep in mind. To do this, open the HBO Max app, tap the profile icon at the bottom right of the screen, tap “Downloads”, tap the “!” next to the expired title, then tap “Renew”.

This is how to renew a downloaded HBO Max title, but what about deleting the ones that are no longer needed? From this same downloads page, press the “Edit” button. Tap the ‘X’ icon next to each title that needs to be deleted, or tap ‘Clear All’ to select all. Once everything is selected, press “Done” to confirm the choices and delete them from the device.

It’s also helpful to know how to customize the few download options HBO has for users. Open the app, tap the profile icon, tap the settings icon at the top left of the screen and tap “Video options”. In the “Downloads” section, there are some important points to be aware of. The first toggle, Download over Wi-Fi only, is enabled by default and prevents downloading shows over mobile data. For those users who have an unlimited data plan and want to download titles even without Wi-Fi, it’s a good idea to turn it off. If someone wants to receive a reminder when they download something via data and not via Wi-Fi, they can turn on the cellular download warning toggle. Last but not the least, take a look at the download quality. It defaults to “Fastest Download”, a lower quality download that takes up less storage space. The second option, “Highest Quality”, uses more storage and shows take longer to download – yet users benefit from searching downloads. many better.
